The new addition to the Jurassic Park/World franchise is upon us. The new instalment could be for many people “overkill.” And it does feel like the people behind the plot of these films have started scraping the barrel for ideas. However there some good opinions that I left the cinema with. My thoughts on this film is mixed and I think I maybe need to go back and re-watch the film to see if I’ve missed anything of great importance.
However, is it time for the franchise to be put to rest or is this just the beginning? If there more sequels planned for the foreseeable future, I’m interested in where they’re going to take franchise. I do feel like that there will be even more Jurassic World films on the horizon, it just depends now, how far are they going to be able to push the series. In my personal opinion they should’ve stopped the franchise at Jurassic Park: The Lost World.
As the perusal, this article will contain SPOILERS, so if you’re behind on the franchise then walk away now, just be careful. There might be the odd Raptor or two out there, consider yourselves warned! The SPOILERS bit and maybe the Raptors, I'll let you decide on that one...
So now that we’ve got the WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD! Out of the way I can continue on with my review, Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom for me was an ok film. I didn’t really leave the cinema “wowed” as it were. I left the cinema with mixed reviews. I enjoyed the film but I just like they are starting to run out of ideas. The trailers for the film however was full of red herrings, that was until the fourth or fifth or whatever number trailer that was released that actually revealed the plot to me. So, technically if you’ve watched all the trailers prior to the film’s release, you’ve already watched the film.
The first trailer was one massive red herring, we were given the opinion that the island was to blow up (which it did) with all the dinosaurs trapped with chance of escape, which sort of happened. Not all the dinosaurs survived the volcanic eruption of Isla Nublar. There was one moment that was heart retching as they escaped the island. It was also heart retching seeing the creatures being treated poorly at their soon-to-be new home.
Originally the impression I got prior to the film’s release was that “The Fallen Kingdom” was going to be the that of dinosaurs’ on the Isla Nublar, however there’s Isla Sorna where a large portion of InGen’s creations now seem to live in peace, for now that is. The title of the film works both ways, The Fallen Kingdom is focused on the destruction of Site A (Isla Nublar) and that of man’s conquest of Earth.
The film ends with the dinosaurs walking/flying/swimming freely across American soil, humanity is no longer the rulers of Earth, and this is where the I believe the franchise could be leading towards. Its Dr. Malcolm’s chaos theory happening in everybody’s homes and streets, that and life has certainly found a way. Could be that now Mother Nature is punishing humanity for playing God and that greed was a contributing factor in the resurrection of the extinct titans that once walked this Earth.
If there are sequels planned for the foreseeable future it’s going to consist of humanity’s struggle to co-exist with the dinosaurs and that it will progress to a fight for survival and a small band of fighters to return the dinosaurs to Jurassic Park. However, I can see the dinosaurs being returned to Isla Sorna. At some point in the new series of films they (if there are any) need to return to Site B. I did like the scenes where the greedy villains faced their demise and became a dinosaur’s lunch. I cackled and roared with laughter, I was rooting on for the dinosaurs throughout the film. Something morbid about laughing at the site of someone being torn in two by two dinosaurs.
The film itself had a level of poetry about it, there were some homages to past films. Mainly Jurassic Park: The Lost World. Which brings me to the conclusion that with the homages being for the second instalment of the Jurassic Park franchise, I can see there being at least another Jurassic World sequel on the cards and that these films are a reboot of a franchise that could really do with a rest. Like Star Wars but I’ll save that for another time…
Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom was an ok film. I enjoyed it but I wasn’t wowed by it, maybe if these films are a reboot and maybe if there is a third Jurassic World film planned that we’ll finally see the demise of Dr. Henry Wu and maybe the odd reference or homage towards Jurassic Park III.
