Imagine a place where you can come and get skills and experience in radio, marketing and managing but also boost your own confidence by being part of valued team of volunteers
This is Newport City Radio
At Newport City Radio our aim is to provide music, entertainment and news. We play the best Indie, Dance, Urban and everything in between to young minded people in Newport.
We believe passionately that an area with the size, population and importance of the City of Newport deserves its own identity; its own voice, its own dedicated radio service that recognises the need to provide listeners with a great variety of music, relevant news and information in an entertaining, engaging and interactive environment.
Newport City Radio will also help to celebrate a talented multicultural Newport City. We see this as an incredible opportunity to boost Newport’s civic pride and will show Newport in the best possible light.
We continue to provide access to radio shows for local acts or national performers who are gigging in Newport and try to support live music from singers, bands MC's and DJ's while giving young people opportunities to play at our events which include Fashion Wales Live, Bboy Wales Championships, Newport City Festival as well as Maindee Festival and Newport County Music Festival.
Who owns Newport City Radio? You do…
A team of dedicated volunteers under the Direction of the board and managers bring their experience and enthusiasm to help us shape Newport City Radio into what you like. And you’re welcome to join us. We have the finest team of presenters Newport has to offer with years of experience. Our presenters are local people; real people with real lives.
Newport City Radio, is a community interest which means we cannot make a profit, which means that we can support Newport without any vested interests. It also makes it a free to listen to service
History
Newport City Radio first began life as Urban Circle Radio, based in Pillgwenlly In 2008 Urban Circle moved to Upper Dock street and grew in size and structure alongside other Urban Circle Projects such as BattleTurf, BBoy Wales and FMA Cymru.
Our station has allowed the people across all areas of city to have their own voice and has provided an outlet for not just the talent across age and cultural concerns but has facilitated a platform for communication and dialogue across the 100,000 plus population.
Newport has been without its own radio station since UTV Radio's 28 day trial Newport FM back in April 2005 and there had not been a test transmission since 2003. Newport City Radio now represents a fantastic opportunity for the city to be on par with major city's across the UK in having its own very own radio station.
We launched and broadcast on FM as Newport City Radio on Wednesday 16th July 2008 for a 12 day trial.
In addition to our online station have been broadcasting annually on 87.9 FM. We have also successfully operated 4 temporary licences, as facilitated by OFCOM. Even with 4 trial FM broadcasts, our station continues to look to the future by continuously enhancing our online stream and website for the benefit of the community.
We were established as a Community Interest Company in January 2010.
