Track 1: Laughing and Not Being Normal.
Breathy, operatic style vocal, nice opener to the album with underappreciated instrumental.
Track 2: California.
The production of this song is high quality. Psychedelic vocal when she shouts California. The song is like before and after a storm with the pouring water at the end of the track.
Favourite lyrics: “The things they see in me, I cannot see myself when you get bored of me, I'll be back on the shelf and when the ocean rises up above the ground baby I'll drown in...”
Track 3: SCREAM (feat. Aristophanes).
Aristophanes is a Taiwanese rapper who raps throughout the track. Experimental and subjective, this song is not for everyone, one of my favourites from the album.
Track 4: Flesh Without Blood.
The first pop song from this album is Flesh without Blood. This song is addicting but in a different way to what we expect from another generic pop artist. The high notes in contrast with the low notes actually work incredibly well especially when you get to the bridge. It’s a much softer and sexier song from the previous three. This song also has a killer music video.
Favourite lyrics: “You claw, you fight, you lose. Got a doll that looks just like you, remember when we used to say "I love you" almost every day. I saw the light in you going out as I close that window. You never liked me anyway”.
Track 5: Belly of the Beat.
This song is not my favourite, it’s too repetitive. I appreciate her trying to display her vocal talent, but I just honestly don’t like it. It’s a filler track.
Track 6: Kill V. Maim.
Our second pop song of the album, this song is techno pop with electronica thrown in. It’s racy, fun and definitely should be on your Spotify playlist. It has elements of the darkness of music, such as a ‘screamo’ lyric, but it works so well with the hard beat of the drum and psychedelic synths and 90’s trance. The scream actually works well as it feels like she’s crying out in rage as she is underappreciated as a woman in the music industry, almost reminiscent of Swine from Lady Gaga’s newest album ARTPOP. It’s my favourite song from the album.
Favourite lyrics: “B-E-H-A-V-E, arrest us, Italiana mobster looking so precious. B-E-H-A-V-E, never more, you gave up being good when you declared a state of war”.
Track 7: Art Angels.
The title track of the album is all revolved around this song. Think of this as a tree trunk and the different songs are the concepts as branches. This one is the main concept, and the others are ideas of a general theme.
Angelic, this song really is one of the best songs of the album in not the best. It is pop influenced with definite 90’s themes.
Favourite lyrics: “Je comprends, Je l'ai dit, C'est la vie, Oh Montréal, pull apart (I don't mind). Running every red light, you were right, Oh Montréal don’t break my heart I think I love you”.
Track 8: Easily.
Starting off slow, it works well with the previous song, Art Angels. It’s slow, happy and bright although different from the concept of the album, it works. Grimses least favourite song off the album, it’s about people leaching onto her success.
Favourite lyrics: “Easily, I'm the sweetest damn thing you ever saw. Easily, suddenly, you don't know me at all. Easily, three years later and now you wanna call. Easily-y-y-y”.
Track 9: Pin.
Another good concept song that’s experimental. Vocals are strong but in a sense that she has a good understanding of her voice. The production of this song is excellent too especially when she finished a chorus and you hear this inclining xylophone type instrument which sounds like a cartoon bubble popping.
Favourite lyrics: “I was only looking for a human to reciprocate” & “Kiss me with a big knife, bloody heart of paradise. Living like a soldier, peace of mind, must be nice”
Track 10: REALiTi.
This song was initially released as a demo and not part of the album. But after releasing it on Soundcloud as a free demo track, critics mostly praised it saying it is the most ‘Grimes’ sounding song from her last album.
High pitched notes take over the choruses while this 90’s pop influence takes over the chorus almost reminiscent of Darude – Sandstorm or some sort of Ibiza trance music.
Favourite lyrics: “Oh, I fear that no life will ever be like this again. Cause your love kept me alive and it made me insane”.
Track 11: World Princess Part II.
This is also one of my favourite tracks from the album. It sounds like an anime character singing. This song is beautiful especially instrumental of the chorus, it’s high pitched but also relaxing. The song is about the prejudice of her being a record producer ‘You’re so far behind me’.
Favourite lyrics: “If I stare into the darkness, I won’t know where I am. I haven’t seen the daylight since I started giving in. My eyes are falling heavy, my feet are moving slow.”
Track 12: Venus Fly (feat. Janelle Monáe).
This song is also very different with a heavy drum beat and almost sounds like a trap/rap song. The production of the instrumental is extremely fast paced and would suit an alternative radio. The violin solo is extremely appreciated.
Favourite lyrics: “What if I pulled my teeth? Cut my hair underneath my chin? Wrap my curls all around the world? Throw my pearls all across the floor? Feeling my beat like a sniper girl (Cause I want it more)”
Track 13: Life in the Vivid Dream.
This song is almost an interlude to the next song. The song is about being different in an oppressive normalising society and is about depressing thoughts.
Track 14: Butterfly.
Beautiful, the vocals and harmonies in this song are so well put together and it’s just an excellent song overall. This song is an excellent ending to an album, it’s soft but still has that experimental theme that works so well with the album.
Favourite lyrics: “Oh, no, it came. Higher than an aeroplane. Don't know this song. Sweeter than a sugar cane. Why you looking for a harmony? There is harmony in everything”.
