Millets Outdoor Clothing recently conducted research on the hunt to find the greenest city… they found that four places in Gwent were in the top ten most eco friendly places across Wales! Newport was crowned third with an eco-friendly score of 7.49 out of ten! Pretty good huh? In second place came Swansea which had a score of 7.98, with Cardiff winning first place with 9.56. Still, it was all very close- go Newport!
The research included factors such as the number of green spaces in the area, annual emissions, walking trails and the number of public electric vehicle chargers. From the survey, it was clear that Newport actually did really well in all of these categories.
The research was carried out to make people more aware of the natural beauty that the UK has to offer.
So, next time you’re out having a stroll in Newport, take a minute to appreciate the greenery, even if it’s just a couple of trees in the centre. Maybe even have a little fun and see how many electric vehicle chargers or walking trails you can spot!
A law firm in Newport has raised an outstanding £3,410 by participating in an annual charity will-writing campaign, putting them in second place for the highest donating firm in Wales. What’s a will-writing campaign you ask? Well, the highly skilled employees of the firm kindly volunteered their own time to use their expertise to write wills, and rather than charging their usual fees, they invited their clients to make a donation to Will Aid. Good idea right!
This money was then shared across the campaign’s partner charities which work across various causes both in the UK and globally.
The campaign has been going since 2019 and a member of the team said they are all very proud to take part and that it’s a brilliant feeling knowing that such well-deserving charities will benefit, helping people who are facing challenging times, both here in the Uk and globally.
Newport Now Bid has plans to bring an Urban Beach into Newports City Centre. All of you Newport locals will be able to save the cost of travelling all the way to the seaside and will instead have the luxury of having the beach brought to you!
Throughout the whole of August, John Frost Square will be filled with family beach fun. From buckets and spades for the little ones, to deck chairs for the parents. What more could you want? So, get your sunscreen and sunglasses at the ready, all set to have a fun day out at the (urban) beach! Let’s hope the sun stays out…
You might remember it from a couple of years ago, it actually happened for a shorter period in the summers of 2017 and 2018. The council has found funding this time to run it for a whole month, so make sure you don’t miss it!
The beach will be open from 9-5 everyday between the 2nd to the 27th of August. Enjoy! Maybe we will see you down there.
The global tech company Microsoft will now have two units in Newport, creating 120 new jobs for locals. On Wednesday, planning permission was granted by councillors for two large units to be built on Celtic Way, on the site of what used to be Quinn Radiators factory which will now get demolished. The tech company are said to be expanding due to the rise of A.I., saying that ‘The pace of change in A.I. demands action today to build a prosperous future for the UK tomorrow’
Planning committee member Councillor Watkins told colleagues ‘It was nice to see a worldwide company coming to the area’, adding he would ‘welcome Microsoft’s arrival in Newport’. The site will undergo landscaping which will include the addition of several new ponds. Microsoft will also invest £104,00 into new walking and cycling infrastructure along Celtic way.
