Ashura Peace March

Thousands of muslims, both men and women came together from three mosques in Newport and one in Bristol to take part in the annual Ashura peace march.

This annual event was the first in the Uk, and has since inspired many other cities to take part.

The ashura march was described as the second biggest event of the year by Mubarak Ali, secretary of the islamic society for Wales. He said the March is to commemorate the prophet Muhammaed’s grandson Imam Husayn and 72 of his family on the sands of Kabala, Iraq.

The march is a peaceful event, representing the strong Muslim community that we have here in Newport.

Mother Walks 140 Miles in Memory of Daughter

Emma Webb will walk the 140 miles from newport to birmingham, with a life size resin horse, starting at her house, eventually ending up at the horse of the year show in Birmingham

This is in memory of her horse loving daughter brodie.

Last December , the prince of wales joined her for 25 minutes and discussed the topic of mental health. Ms Webb said it was ‘just amazing’ to be surprised by him en route.

Emma has already raised tens of thousands of pounds through her fundraising. She also leaves decorated horseshoes in hotspots where people take their own lives, with qr codes in the hope that she can help people. She has since become a finalist in the GoCard less JustGiving Awards in September.

Reggae and Riddim Festival

Over ten thousand people came to Newport over the weekend for the reggae riddim festival enjoying headline acts such as Gyptian, Lady Leshurr, Bitty McClean and Tarrus Riley.

The festival acts as a celebration of reggae music and jamaican culture across the friday, saturday and Sunday

The festival was designed by Welsh award-winning youth charity Urban Circle alongside The Jamaica Rastafari Indigenous Village from Montego Bay, the University of South Wales and JukeBox Collective. It is a platform for young people & communities to expose their talents and provide opportunities for growth and development, celebrating the diversity and rich culture of two countries.

Summer Sessions is back

Summer sessions are back on this year bigger and better, it started last Tuesday the 30th and is running all the way to Saturday the 3rd.

The summer sessions aim to bring the newport community closer together through the enjoyment of good music in the sun

Originally starting off as a small get together at our old base at The Neon, the summer sessions have been kicked into action thanks to the funding from from shared prosperity funding at newport city council, so with the help of Dirty Carrot and The Beechwood park community group and their excellent event planning skills, it is back better than ever and is taking place at Beechwood park

The sessions feature over 20 performances of music and comedy, including the likes of pseudo cool, Joe Kelly, Macy and stand-up comedy act Drew Taylor.

Tickets are free, there’s food stalls and the event is family friendly, what’s not to love? Come on down and say hello
