One of our favourite Newport bands has just won the ‘Best UK Band Award’. Can you guess who it was?

Our very own Skidred.

Formed in Newport in 1998, Skindred are known for their unique fusion of heavy metal and genres such as reggae.

Held at the O2 Forum Kentish Town venue, twelve winners were crowned at the 8th annual Heavy Music Awards. As the band were playing a gig in France at the time, the band’s frontman known as Benji collected their award.

In his acceptance speech, he said they were ‘buzzed’ and ‘honoured’ to get the award. He also paid special thanks to their fans, saying

‘It’s all about the fans, about the fans and about the fans some more’

I mean, we can’t be surprised that a band from Newport won the best UK band award, can we? We know how much good music comes from our wonderful city. Still, go on boys! You’ve done us all proud.

Did you know you can have your say in the future of Newport’s culture?

How? You may ask. Well, the council is asking the residents, businesses and visitors of Newport to complete a survey as part of work to create a new cultural strategy for the city.

The survey asks people to share their views on the city’s current cultural offer, and how it can be developed in the future.

The results will help Newport City Council shape the strategy, which is being developed in partnership with the city’s cultural sector among others.

Newport’s creative industries sector is one of the fastest growing in Wales, with employment count in the sector increasing 125 per cent between 2015 and 2022.

It is estimated to account for around 5,500 jobs in the city, and £400m gross value added per annum to Newport’s economy.

The survey ends on the 20th September so make sure you get involved. You can complete the survey here at https://form.typeform.com/to/wTbf2Ku5 or head to Newport City councils website.

A mural has been painted in honour of one of our local heroes who sadly passed away in July.

Beloved musician from Pill in Newport and father-of-three, Trevor Seivwright, passed away in July 2024 at the age of 63 and tributes were paid to the drummer of ‘Black Roots.’ Many described him as a ‘local legend,’ and a mural has now been painted in his honour.

This is such a lovely example of the incredible community we have here in Newport.

The memorial for Trevor, held in July, was attended by hundreds of people to pay their respects to him and his family.

Following his death tributes flooded in for Trevor

Trevor’s family members said: “Trevor was known to everyone as the almighty Lickshot, that’s what we used to call him.”

“He was a legend who was like a superstar too. When he walked in the room, he’d just make you laugh.”
