Who?? Was in a Newport school 10 years ago?

I bet you can’t guess who visited a Newport school 10 years ago last weekend.

Go on, have a guess.

Barack Obama, that’s who. Can you believe that? You might even remember it.

He came along with 60 other world leaders as part of the NATO Summit.

They stayed in the Celtic Manor hotel, which the director at the time, Mr Simon Gibson called an unforgettable moment.

During Obama’s time in Newport, he visited Mount Pleasant Primary School in Rogerstone, with David Cameron. As you can imagine, locals flooded the area to have a sneak peak, with many former students also joining to take part in the excitement. Bystanders stood on garden walls to get a view of the long convoy of cars and vans, with President Obama waving from a black car with tinted windows.

How cool is that.

Environmental group for Newport community causes raises £12,000

The Newport canal clean up and litter picking group worked hard to raise over £12,000 for charities, schools and community organisations.

The group litter pick, and fundraise money alongside donating things like mince pies, biscuits and chocolates to nursing and assisted living homes around Christmas time. They also donated 200 selection boxes, 100 activity books and 200 Gwent Dragon rugby flags to the children’s ward at the Grange University Hospital.

When raising the £12,000, they decided to donate half of it to the Turners Syndrome Support Society. This is a charity close to the hearts of charity supporters Darren Rice, his partner Gillian Amos and their daughter Kelly Horton. Kelly and her husband, Clinton raise awareness for the cause as their daughter Kara Jay was diagnosed with the syndrome.

Were you here celebrating one of Newport’s biggest weekends?

A weekend of parades, musicians and drag queens…

This year’s Pride was not one to miss.

Kicking off with the parade that started in John Frost Square, there were a crew of drummers and a sea of different flags and colourful outfits to fit in with the festival’s theme.

To continue with the vibrant energy, there were then two stages, hosting different music and even some drag queens, with a special appearance from Ru paul drag race Season 2 runner up, Tayce who of course is from Newport.

Andrew Mudd, 31, chair of Pride in the Port said: “We are hosting one of the most diverse Pride’s in the UK, we are so pleased to have people of colour, people from different socio-economic backgrounds, and people of different ages.”
