This is what happened when Port Vale came to play.
On the 21st of September, The Pure Local Extra show at Newport City Radio had guests Jimi and Tariq from local cover band ‘Sounds of Revelry’ to talk about themselves and their work.
Sounds of Revelry is a local cover band (formed around 2019), meaning they do not write their own songs but perform covers of pre-existing songs mainly for events or at various food venues. This was their first time on the show as this band, although in the past some members have been on as part of different bands.
We were joined by half of the members, Jimi and Tariq and they were interviewed by Kym. The band consists of Jimi on drums, Tariq on guitar, Chris on bass and Richard (Skimpy) on vocals. Despite the other members not being able to join us, we’re sure that they tuned into the show or plan on listening to the recording on the ‘listen again’ feature on our website.
To start the show, they talked about the kind of music they perform. They usually cover a mixture of rock and pop tunes. They like to perform a wide range of all-time favourites. On the show we listened to their cover of Teenage Kicks by The Undertones, just an example of some of the music they perform. The two mentioned an interest in composing and writing their own songs but unfortunately they don’t have any time to do so. Although the idea is still there in case the opportunity comes up.
We then moved onto their performances. Their first ever show was at Beechwood Park for the ‘Music in the park’ even. Other than this event, they’ve played in Beechwood Park multiple times before for other events. Other than the park, they frequent Slippin Jimmy’s in Newport often. We also got information on upcoming gigs that the band will be doing in the upcoming months. Locations like Caerleon, Monmouth, Caldicot, Cardiff and various food and drink venues.
We talked a bit about songs that they’ve been working on. They said that they’ve been looking at Oasis and Bruce Springsteen songs to potentially look at. The topic of Christmas songs came up, Christmas time is one of the busier periods so the idea of covering a few
Christmas songs came up. The answer? Maybe!
Towards the end of the show we talked about the origins of the band. Jimi and Tariq have known each other for around 25 years. Throughout that time, they’ve always been fans of music. Around 10 years ago, they played in a band for fun although it ended after they went their separate years.
Later on, Tariq met Skimpy at their children’s football group. They became friends and the topic of music came up, so they played a bit of music together. Eventually Jimi and a bassist joined the group. That bassist would leave due to personal reasons and so the 3 put out advertisements for a new bassist and eventually Chris joined. Obviously a very abridged version of the origin of Sounds of Revelry.
Finally, as per the norm, the show ended with a kazoo performance of a very famous intro of a famous song.
