5 things you should know about local musician, Casey Maunder.

Do you come from a musical family?

Yes I’m from a very musical family. My dad plays guitar and piano and has been in bands from the 60s and still plays to this day. The house was always full of instruments and so myself and my brother were able to play from a very young age.

How old were you when you gave your first live performance?

I was probably about 12 or 13. I used to go along with my dad’s band on a Saturday night and myself and the son of one of the other guys would get up in the break and torment the crowd at a working men’s club with covers of rock and metal songs. lol

Where is your favourite place that you've visited. Why should people see it for themselves?

I love the Greek islands for how chilled they are but my favourite place is definitely New York. I’ve been lots of times and I still find something new to do every time. I love the vibe there as it’s so busy in Manhattan but you can also find really cool places to chill in Brooklyn for instance. I’d love to perform there but the opportunity just hasn’t presented itself yet!

What advice would you give your 13 year old self if you could go back in time?

I’d tell him to avoid all distractions and grab every opportunity with both hands. It’s easy with hindsight I guess but there were so many opportunities that maybe I didn’t have the courage to take when I first started pushing my music and playing in bands. I should have upped sticks and gone to the states and tried it out there. I’ve always believed in my own ability but I guess I was too nervous to really go for it back then or maybe I just thought I’d miss Wales too much.

If you could collaborate with any successful songwriter, dead or alive, who would it be?

There are two that I’d love to have collaborated with but depending on what you deem as success, I guess only one of them were really successful and that’s Queen. I’d have love to have written riffs with Brian May and vocal Melodies with Freddie. Freddie will always be the greatest singer and performer that has ever lived for me and I just can’t see anyone ever beating him. The other would be a band called Jellyfish and it’s criminal that they weren’t superstars. The two albums they released were so eclectic and multi layered that it is astonishing. Their song writing is genuinely up there with Queen and The Beatles yet most people don’t even know who they are. They kind of have a cult following amongst musicians and to have been in the room when they recorded the album Spilt Milk would have been really special.
