Tell us about the first song you wrote

I wrote my first serious song at the age of 21 and it was very much rooted in a nostalgic feeling. It was based on the first person I ever fell for a little bit and although it talks about the imposibility of some situations it’s not a sad song at all. It’s more an appreciation of good memories that you always get to keep no matter how breif some things are. I definitely still perform it and I am quite proud of it.

I find songwriting a bit like looking back through a photoalbum now, where you’re taken back to that point in your life every time you sing a song from the past. It was the first time I realised how it felt to write songs rooted in true emotion and how it could feel to write a full song that you were happy with and could give yourself full credit for.

What was the best big concert you've ever been to and the best small or local show?

The best big concert I’ve been to so far is Hozier I think. He’s one of my all time favourite song writers and the atmosphere there was magical. You really could feel the environment of a whole arena of people who were very emotionally invested in his music. My favourite thing about music is the ability to convey emotion and situation through lyrics, so he’s definitely one of my biggest inspirations and seeing him live did not disappoint.

The best local gig I’ve been to was Katielou’s album launch in Le Pub. Her music is magical and it was the best atmosphere of people who are inspired by her music. A really amazing night.

What new skill would you like to learn?

I would definitely love to learn piano. I really want to extend my knowledge of music theory to be able to compose stronger melodies and understand more about what I feel for music.

I also think you can write very different types of songs using piano opposed to guitar and that would be interesting to explore. I definitely think I will get around to learning it but it’s a slow process. I’m currently also in the process of learning more about composition on guitar and studying a masters in biology alongside my music projects. So I’m short on time to put everything into it at the moment but bit by bit is better than nothing.

What's the best way to spend a Sunday?

I always like getting a bit of practice in on a Sunday while everything’s a bit quieter. To relax after, I quite enjoy a movie day on a Sunday as a chance to reset before the next week. Although, if the weather is particularly nice, I do like to go out for a little walk and see some nature too.

Do you like to cook? If I came for dinner, what would you make for me?
