A couple from Wales has been changing lives in Rwanda, one rugby ball at a time. Mary and Glyn Watkins arrived there at first with a vision to share their love of rugby. Then, through training sessions, they introduced kids and adults to the game, not just as a sport but as a tool for building confidence and community.
The charity, which is now called friends of Rwanda Rugby was first launched in 2007 by a teacher called Emma Rees who had originally gone to Rwanada to volunteer, but then decided she would share her favorite sport with her students. Starting with a few rugby balls and basic coaching, they launched programs that taught more than just rugby skills. Their sessions focused on teamwork, discipline, and leadership, opening many doors and building confidence in young Rwandans. Over time, there has been a massive growth, with teams popping up in villages and urban areas, some even holding local tournaments!
This couple has done more than just bring a sport to Rwanda.Through rugby, they’ve ignited a sense of pride and resilience, transforming lives both on and off the field. What an inspiration.
A fantastic Blackwood charity is spreading the holiday spirit by gathering Christmas gifts for children in struggling families! With donations from the community and local businesses, volunteers are busy wrapping toys, books, and winter essentials to make sure every child has a magical morning.
Helping Caring Teams has been carrying out the present delivery service for 5 whole years and is run by the amazing Hayley Thomas, she said
“We started doing it and we loved it, and a lot of people got on board. We run a scheme where we buy presents for children who are in need and it’s for various reasons. Some of them have got disabilities, some of them are homeless, or they are living with nan and aunties, but they all have presents from different members of the community.’
So, If you’re in Blackwood-keep an eye out for donation spots and ways to help 🙂
