When do Newport's lights get switched on?

Newport city centre is set to kick off the festive season with a spectacular family-friendly event on Saturday, November 16. The Countdown to Christmas will run from 2pm to 5:30pm, featuring live music, fairground rides, celebrity guests, and a grand finale with the official switch-on of the city’s Christmas lights followed by a stunning fireworks display.

Organized by the Newport Now Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with Newport City Council, Friars Walk, and Newport City Radio, this much-anticipated event will take place at the junction of Charles Street and Commercial Street. Funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, *Countdown to Christmas* builds on the success of previous years, which have drawn thousands of visitors into the city.

What you can you expect?

Musical performances will keep the crowds entertained throughout the afternoon, with a chart-topping artist—responsible for four number one singles and over three million UK sales—headlining the show. The city’s mayor, Councillor Ray Mogford, will be joined by a special guest to switch on the Christmas lights at 5:15pm, followed by a spectacular fireworks display at 5:30pm.

To add to the festive spirit, free parking will be available every Saturday in council-owned city centre car parks from November 16 through to December 31.

Newport Now BID Chairman Zep Bellavia said:
“We’re proud and excited to deliver our ninth Countdown to Christmas event, which officially launches the festive shopping season in Newport. This is always a fantastic family event, and we look forward to welcoming visitors to the city centre, supporting our local businesses throughout the holiday season.”

Councillor Dimitri Batrouni, leader of Newport City Council, added:
“Newport’s Countdown to Christmas* is a highlight of the year. It’s fantastic to see the city centre come alive with the festive spirit, and we’re going bigger and better this year with free parking, ice skating, markets, entertainment, and more!”

Friars Walk Asset Manager Simon Pullen shared his excitement:
“We’re thrilled to be part of this year’s event. The Countdown to Christmas brings an amazing atmosphere to Newport, and we’re proud to sponsor the fireworks display. We’re also looking forward to hosting Santa’s Workshop at Friars Walk in December, bringing the magic of Christmas to life.”

Newport City Radio Managing Director Ian Lamsdale said:
“On our 16th birthday, Newport City Radio became the city’s dedicated DAB local broadcaster. We’re volunteer-powered and committed to making radio fun, engaging, and community-driven. We’re excited to return to the big stage for the second year, showcasing incredible local musicians and helping make some noise at this brilliant event.”

Stay tuned for more exciting announcements about the special celebrity guest and other musical performers in the coming days.
