The Fierce Fight Against the Flood

When heavy rains threatened to flood a home in Ynysddu, Newport, local residents became real-life heroes. As water levels rose dangerously, these community members jumped into action, grabbing brooms and buckets to get the water down a drain. Their efforts went beyond just protecting property—they gave neighbors hope and comfort during a challenging time.

Thereasa Jones, whose house it was, said

‘”I’m always so worried when it rains that we’ll get flooded, as we have in previous years, especially as I’m disabled and don’t get out much so am potentially more vulnerable…the community was just brilliant in helping us and working to get rid of the water. They were out there for nearly four hours, scraping away. I can’t thank them enough.”

By supporting each other emotionally and coming together, this group demonstrated the power of community resilience. Their actions are a heartwarming reminder of what can be achieved when people work together during a crisis. Bravo, Ynysddu!

Heroes of The City

South Wales is buzzing with excitement as the eighth annual Health and Care Awards are set to take place on Wednesday, December 4, at Rodney Parade. This inspiring ceremony celebrates the incredible contributions of health and care providers in the region.

Among the finalists is Will, a volunteer with SARA, the lifeboat and land rescue group covering Newport and beyond. Whether training his team, fundraising, or responding to emergencies at all hours and in all weather, Will is a true community hero.

Other nominations include paramedics like Zoey Silva and Chris Collins, whose life-saving efforts gave cardiac arrest survivors Neil Jones and Jayne Partridge a second chance. South Wales’ true heroes, every one of them!

Dreading the big Christmas cook?

We get it. It can be a stressful time!

For those looking to skip the stress of cooking this Christmas, Newport has great news! It ranks as the second cheapest city in the UK to eat out on Christmas Day, with a median cost of £66.49 per person. Only Kingston upon Hull beats it at £64.99. Compare that to places like Manchester, where dining out can cost £159 per person! In Newport, it looks like your holiday meal won’t break the bank!

So, if you’re looking to skip the stress, or just fancy doing something different this year- have a look at some of your locals.
