Newport native Ian McAtee always knew that retirement wouldn’t mean slowing down—it would be his chance to truly embrace life. Packing up his guitars, he set off on an adventure.
He joined an online community called Talent is Timeless, designed for musicians over 50, where he discovered new insights about making music, collaborated on projects, and formed lasting friendships. His journey soon took him across Europe.
When Dani and I first met Ian, he was living in France. On a visit back to Newport, he stopped by the radio station, bringing us some exquisite French cheeses and a copy of his latest album.
Ian stayed in touch, regularly sending new songs for Pure Local, and before we knew it, he had met his partner Isabella and moved to Germany.
Since our last conversation, Ian and, Isabella, have taken their adventure to the next level—they sold their home, bought a boat, and learned to sail! Their vessel is currently in Norway, with plans to journey south this summer.
But what does this have to do with a song, you ask?
Here’s the story.
While Ian and Isabella wanted a name that reflected their new lifestyle, they discovered that the boat’s previous owners had named it Olivia in memory of a lost child. Respecting its history but wanting to make it their own, they decided on Olivia – Spirit of Freedom.
Naturally, Ian turned this story into a song.
The lyrics reflect their journey:
A story of adventure, love, and freedom—set to music.
