Calling all performers, crafters, dancers, and drummers — Newport’s flagship arts festival, Big Splash, is back this July 19–20! It’s the biggest free outdoor arts festival in Wales and a highlight of the city’s summer. Organised by The Riverfront Theatre, this year’s event promises bold, brilliant performances right in the heart of town.
Local talent is being actively encouraged to apply — whether you’ve got a band, a ballet, or a balloon-twisting act. Submissions are open until June 1st, so don’t wait!
A newly resurfaced video clip from May 8, 1945, is giving us all the feels. Shot in Newport on VE Day, the footage shows streets teeming with joy, music, and celebration as the city marked the end of World War II. Locals of all ages danced, sang, and waved flags — and judging by the scenes, they knew how to throw a party. It’s a heartwarming reminder of Newport’s community spirit and resilience — something we’ve clearly still got in spades today. Head over to South Wales argus to check it out.
Newport’s Kingsway Centre is getting a major glow-up. Recently bought by the Boyce Group, this once-struggling shopping centre is being reimagined as a bustling city hub — think street food, coworking spaces, events, leisure spots, and boutique shopping. The aim? To turn it into a mixed-use destination for work, play, and a good bit of shopping.
Expect fewer big-name chains and more local flavour, along with better links to the riverfront and Friars Walk. It’s a big step in reshaping Newport city centre into something vibrant, modern, and people-first.
t’s not every day you spot a Hollywood A-lister in Wales, but actor Shia LaBeouf (yep, Transformers and Fury) has been spotted filming his latest gritty drama Salvable right here in Newport. Alongside British actors Michael Socha and Toby Kebbell, LaBeouf plays a street boxer fighting to reclaim his life.
Even more impressive? He’s been training with real-world boxing champ Carl Froch for the role. It’s another win for Wales as a filming hotspot — and a bit of a thrill for anyone lucky enough to stumble onto the set!
