A life changing story...

Fostering can change a child’s life – and, as Judith discovered, it can completely transform yours too. A proud foster carer and part of the Foster Wales network, Judith recently shared her journey live on Newport City Radio, offering a heartfelt insight into her experiences.

It all started when her own home, once full of children’s laughter, grew quiet. With no grandchildren on the horizon, she realised she missed the joy and energy that young children bring. After spotting an advert on Facebook and chatting with friends already involved in fostering, Judith decided to take the leap.

The application process took around six months, and involved sharing her life story in remarkable detail – an emotional experience that left her reflecting on everything she had been through. The day she was approved, she received a call: could she take in two little girls the very next day? Without hesitation, she said yes.

Those two girls are still with her today, now growing into confident young women. Judith describes the experience as incredibly fulfilling: “They’ve brought us love, joy, and a sense of purpose. Our house is noisy again – but it’s the best kind of noise.”

Training, support, and guidance are always available, she says, and her husband Phil plays an active role in day-to-day life and learning too. Judith encourages anyone with patience, love, and a good sense of humour to consider fostering – especially if they’re ready to offer safety and stability to a child who truly needs it.

She admits there have been challenges, especially when navigating external relationships, but the support from the Foster Wales Newport team has been vital. “Whatever you need, someone is just a phone call away,” she says.

Judith recently joined us at the Love Live Music Awards, presenting an award and sharing the experience with her foster daughters. “They thought they were on TV!” she laughs. “It was magical.”

Now 67, Judith’s not planning to stop any time soon – health permitting, she wants to continue supporting young lives for as long as possible. Her only regret? Not starting sooner.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, Judith’s advice is simple: just look into it. Your next chapter could change a child’s life forever.
