I asked band member, Mog Morris to tell me about Zulu: the meaning and inspiration for the song. This is what he told me:
“The style of the song was greatly influenced by Amy Winehouse’s “Tears Dry on Their Own,” with the initial bassline mimicking the descending bass notes used in Winehouse’s track.
Once Zulu’s bassline was written by lead guitarist Morgun Bennett, who began the songwriting process in July 2022, he brought his idea to Newport’s One Louder Studios where the band was directed on which route to take for the song.
Matthew Morris, Owain Davies and Leo Cain (the instrumentalists of the group) followed Morgun’s direction when it came to the music, preparing for lead singer Dan Gidden to write the lyrics.
Zulu is a metaphor for identity: an expression of self according, to Pye Corners lead guitarist. “You are who you want to be and if someone is going to take that away from you, you’ll take it out on them.”
As Dan’s lyrics read: “If you ever try and take my Zulu, I’ll put this spear right through you”
