Cwmbran was one of the first post-war new towns established in the UK. Designated in 1949 under the New Towns Act, it was created to provide employment and housing after World War II, and to ease overcrowding in nearby industrial cities like Newport.

The name “Cwmbran” means “Valley of the Crow” in Welsh!

The town is also home to Cwmbran Town AFC, nicknamed The Crows, who were one of the founding members of the Welsh Premier League and even played in European competitions in the 1990s.
