Firstly, we listened to some music by Drew and Alli and then we got to know about the story behind the song and what the song may be about.
The first being “Never Too Old” by Alli. She wanted to tackle the topic of ageism in the music industry. She has found that in the mainstream industry, they don’t care for your music if you get past 30, although she believes it doesn’t matter what age you are and that you are never too old to sing. The next song being “The Truth” by Drew. The song came from a specific era in his life; learning from the past and building the future. It’s about being honest with yourself. The song was also recently one of our records of the week.
Last Thursday, it was the Love Live Music Awards, hosted by us. One of the categories was best Christmas song, and Alli won with her song “Under The Mistletoe”, the first Christmas song she’s written. She told us that she wanted a retro Christmas feel. Her producer said it felt quite jazzy, so he added some more Jazz elements. Alli also wanted some harmonies in the song, so she got some of her friends to put in some backing vocals. Unfortunately, she couldn’t make the award evening, so we presented it to her today.
We talked a little about how our artists got into music. Drew used to play in a metal band, but he has since moved away from it to hip hop and rap since he has always been into rap. When he went into high school, everyone was listening to metal and the idea to be a rapper was put on the back burner. The rapper idea slowly re-emerged and it went from there. Although he has considered making a metal/rap song.
Kym then asked both Drew and Alli the question, “Who would you be a tribute act for?” Drew has done a cover song before but he would be a tribute act for Eminem as it is the obvious answer. Alli does some covers when gigging but she would be a tribute act for ABBA as they have always been an influence for her.
We listened to a few more songs but Drew and Alli. We played “Humanity” by Alli, from her debut album. The song being about many of the conflicts happening in the world and asking why can’t we have peace. Then we played “Break” by Drew, a song about being in a hard time in your life.
Finally, what’s going on and what’s happening next. Alli should be playing in the Big Splash in July. She has also entered Talent is Timeless with Never Too Old. Finally, she has written another 3 songs that should be recorded and out in the future. As for Drew, he has a new single on the 27th entitled “When I Prove You Wrong” as well as a new record out this year, but with no date yet
