t’s around five hundred days since the outbreak and all is calm at the prison as Season 4 begins. Rick has relinquished his leadership role to take up farming and the survivors have gained a pig. However, just when the group think things are settling down they are faced with a new and lethal challenge – the flu.
Early on in the season, as rather skeletal looking Walkers are held off by the fence, I am forced to wonder just how long a Walker can go without eating? Surely at some point the rate of decay and muscle wastage must make it impossible for them to seek out human flesh?
Back in season 2 at the CDC, it was confirmed that Walkers can starve, but it takes a lot longer than with humans. There is no sign of starvation reducing the numbers of Walkers this season, however, as the group quickly gets ambushed when on a supply run and the hoards are seen continuously grouping at the prison fence.
Season four is very much a series of transitions. A lot of unanswered stories are bought to a close, characters are killed off, and new characters are introduced. We also see the main characters divided which allows a focus to be pulled back onto their individual characters and how they cope in the new world.
This season marks the entry of some new key characters, including the man who hasn’t let the apocalypse stop him having a perfectly trimmed moustache, Abraham Ford. Abraham is quick-witted and quick tempered. He enjoys killing Walkers, he is reckless and he is brave. Having lost all his family, Abraham has little to lose and this can be seen in his gung-ho approach to life.
Eugene also makes his entrance this series; his character is opposite to Abraham’s in many ways. Eugene is awkward and clumsy but extremely intelligent. Could he hold the key to survival? Can he stop the infection?
Eventually the survivors all find their way to the old railway track, where signs point them towards an apparent safe-haven, called Terminus. One by one, they reunite, but all is not as it seems and the group are captured.
Next time I’ll be taking a look back at seasons 5 and 6, as the survivors set up home in Alexandria.
