very year, in the lead up to Christmas, stores and brands start releasing their Christmas advertising and battle for those prime time slots, desperate to be the best Christmas advert of the year. This has become a massive part of British Christmas culture so much so that we can’t wait to see what emotive and heartwarming stories are going to be presented to us every year - which in a world of skipping adverts, is actually quite bizarre!
Nevertheless, we Brits love it and that is not going to change anytime soon. I am going to be sharing with my top ten Christmas ads, ranking them from ten to one, until I find my winner of this almighty battle.
This one is a sweet one. A little girl spreading Christmas cheer as she hands out little pink gifts to the people on her list, accompanied by her little toy wolf. I love the animation in this advert. It feels very much like a Disney short film with its style and the moving instrumental music underneath. But alas, it is not my favourite this year!
I didn’t like this one when I first saw it, but much like its song, it grew on me. I really like the message of the song as well as it being sung by many different people from all walks of life. I think that made it a very personal advert. I also like how it is mostly black and white with orange graphics as it matches the rest of Sainsbury’s branding this past year.
This was one of the ads I instantly liked. We see the many different processes an Amazon box can go through for it to arrive at our doors, but they are all singing along to 'Give A Little Bit' by Supertramp. Each box has a different voice that builds up an Amazon box choir! I also love how the boxes interact with each other in this advert. It always puts a smile on my face.
A modern-day Cinderella story all condensed down to 90 seconds. I really loved the modern take on this story for this advert with them trying to find each other through hashtags on social media. I also love how magical the ad feels through the set dressing and cinematography. Who doesn’t love a Christmassy love story?!
Of course, there's an advert connected to something that’s in the cinema right now, and this year we have Paddington! Another advert that is on point with it’s set decoration creating that magical Christmas atmosphere. I love the story in this one too with Paddington mistaking a burglar as Santa as he starts redelivering the presents the burglar has just nicked.
Another heartwarming advert featuring CGI bears but this one is just lovely. It follows the story of two bears in love who wait for each other at the airport through the years. As the advert goes on you see the bears get older and their family expanding. There is one moment in the advert that makes you think that something that has happened to one of the bears which honestly, almost broke me. It has ‘end of Love Actually’ vibes and if you don’t love that movie then you need to reevaluate your life choices!
The famous John Lewis advert is only at number four! As much as I love this advert with its very sweet story about a friendly monster that lives under the bed and plays games with the little boy all night, I just don’t feel it is as good as previous John Lewis adverts. Not only that but it doesn’t feel Christmassy! The John Lewis advert is the one everyone looks forward to the most because we all expect a heart wrenching story that makes us all blubber over our mince pies, but this one didn’t do that one for me. Don’t get me wrong, I did shed a tear when Moz sacrificed himself with a nightlight so the little boy could sleep and I adore Elbow’s version of 'Golden Slumbers' that goes with it.
This one is at number three simply because of how it was put together! I love the cinematography, the set design, the editing, the stunts and that wonderful dancing. It’s like a mini love story through the music bringing these two people together. Yeah, my media brain took over on this one…
Second place is one that got me right in the feels. We all have that one movie that we always watch at Christmas time that brings back so many wonderful memories of Christmases gone by. This advert portrays exactly that with The Sound of Music; a film that my family loves! We see a little girl and her mum grow up watching the film every Christmas no matter what and then passing it on tradition to the little girl’s little girl at the end. Just wonderfully warm and relatable.
I have had a soft spot for Kevin the Carrot ever since last years advert from Aldi. This year we are introduced to his love interest, Katie. I adore everything about this advert from the mixture of animation and live action, the Dr Seuss style rhyming story, wonderfully magical narration from Jim Broadbent and that hilarious line from Kevin himself towards the end that always makes me chuckle. Defiantly worthy of the number one spot this year!
