Gig Goin’ – WRKHOUSE at Le Pub

Introducing: WRKHOUSE

After releasing their debut EP ‘Out of the Blue’, North Wales four-piece WRKHOUSE made their live debut at the iconic Le Pub.

This sold-out show, thanks to their loyal and fast growing fanbase, was highly anticipated by supporters and the band themselves. The line-up was completed by support from Good Things and Cyn Cwsg providing an exciting mix of indie and rock artists from different parts of Wales.

Support

Good Things are an indie band from Cardiff who have already played some iconic Welsh venues including Clwb Ifor Bach in their hometown. They provided a strong short set for the small crowd and created great noise. Perfect alternative vocals were matched with heavy riffs and impressive drumming. They may not have released any music yet but are excellent live and are ones to look out for in the near future.

After a short break next up were indie pop contingent Cyn Cwsg. This was their debut gig in Le Pub and they mesmerised the crowd with their soothing vocals and ambient riffs. It is not very often that you get three people who can sing well in a band, but this lot are proving they can do just that. They have already released a couple of songs and have toured Welsh venues including The Bunkhouse in Swansea and Cwrw in Carmarthen. Their bi-lingual and mostly Welsh language songs were a perfect way to get a now nearly full room in the mood for the headline act. An absolute joy to witness.

WRKHOUSE

Approaching quarter to ten and it was time for the headline act that everyone was anticipating, and the band absolutely delivered. It all started off with the band walking on stage to ‘Byw a Bod’ which is the lead track from their debut EP, this transitioned seamlessly into ‘Time Again’ as it does on that record. Highlights included ‘Snow’, ‘Y Cyffro’ and their debut single ‘Getaway’. Truth be told, every track was a pleasure to experience live.

With a nod to their future, we got some unreleased new songs proving the band are intent on releasing an album soon. A great cover of Motion Sickness by Phoebe Bridgers was sung beautifully by touring musician Sam Brockett. The band ended on ‘Take’ and an end jam, this was a spectacular way to conclude a phenomenal performance.

There are not enough superlatives to describe how good this band are, we got to hear a collection of songs from their wonderful debut EP ‘Out of the Blue’ which was released on Friday the fifth of April. The jamming sessions which merged into the next songs were a delight, with heavy riffs and rock drumming, it was a night that got the crowd moving.

Lewys Meredydd Siencyn is a captivating frontman with his ability to sing in both Welsh and English language while also changing the tempo. The whole band are talented musicians and are a BBC Horizons Launchpad Fund awardee for 2024. This sets them up for even bigger gigs in the future, they will no doubt be headlining festivals in a couple of years. It was a joy to watch in such an intimate venue on the penultimate night of their EP launch tour.
