Empowering young people

A local training provider is giving young people across Newport and Southeast Wales new opportunities to gain skills, experience, and confidence through the Jobs Growth Wales programme.

Representatives from Itec, James Loveridge and Ben from the Newport branch, spoke on Newport City Radio about how their organisation helps 16- to 19-year-olds who are not currently in education, employment, or training to find a path that suits them.

“We help young people who might not have had the best experience in school to find where they fit,” said Ben, a youth engagement officer at iTech. “It’s about giving them options and confidence.”

Tailored Support and Training

Itec works closely with Careers Wales, schools, and local authorities in Newport, Torfaen, and Monmouthshire to ensure that young people know about available training opportunities. Each learner receives individualised support, from employability coaching to essential skills qualifications equivalent to GCSEs.

James Loveridge, who has worked in training for over two years, explained:

“Jobs Growth Wales Plus is open to anyone aged 16 to 19 who isn’t in education or work. We support learners from every background, whether they’re just starting out or already have A-levels but aren’t sure what comes next.”

Practical Experience Through Work Placements

A key part of the programme involves hands-on work placements with local employers. iTech has built partnerships across Newport, including with local shops, beauty salons, restaurants, and even Newport City Radio.

“We can place young people in almost any field — from retail and customer service to mechanics and media,” said Loveridge. “It’s all about helping them find what they enjoy and what suits them best.”

Placements typically last between six and nine months, with ongoing one-to-one support for both the learner and the employer.

Overcoming Barriers

Many young people face challenges such as anxiety, transport costs, or low confidence. Itec addresses these through financial support, including a £60 weekly training allowance, daily meal contributions, and full travel reimbursement. They also prioritise mental wellbeing with regular check-ins and wellbeing activities such as animal therapy and vocational wellbeing days.

“We build a big support network around every learner,” Ben said. “Confidence and self-esteem are often the biggest barriers — so we focus on breaking those down.”

Real Success Stories

James shared the story of a learner who tried several vocations before finding her calling in customer service.

“She started with us unsure of what she wanted to do. After a few placements, she found a role in a local pet supply shop and did brilliantly. She’s now completing a Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.”

A Call for Local Employers

Itec is now calling on local employers to get involved by offering work placements or apprenticeships.

“You don’t have to hire a young person at the end,” said Loveridge. “Just by mentoring and sharing your workplace skills, you’re giving them a massive step up.”
