Newport City Radio welcomed musician Mr Bewlay to discuss his latest EP and share insights into his musical journey.
Mr Bewlay returned to Newport City Radio around the same time as last year for a similar interview, this time with Dani and Stephen. The conversation primarily focused on his newest EP, *Against All Reason*, which was released today (14th of September).
The interview began with Mr Bewlay reflecting on his path into the music industry. Despite the extensive catalog of music to his name, he initially had no specific desire to enter the music world. Instead, he expressed a love for performing, explaining that any opportunity to get on stage is what captivates him. As he put it, “if I can get on a stage, then it’s great.”
His initial passion for performing came from theatre, as he once aspired to be an actor or writer. Music allowed him to combine these passions, enabling him to write songs and perform them. He also noted that music gave him the freedom to perform without the restrictions often found in acting, where others dictate your moves. His music performances are highly visual, as he believes that conveying the messages of his songs visually is essential.

Next, we delved into his songwriting process. Mr Bewlay described it as fluid, constantly evolving with no fixed approach. He explained that sticking to the same songwriting methods can lead to rehashing old ideas. For his latest EP, he brought several half-formed ideas into the studio, unsure of their final direction. To develop these songs, he drew inspiration from other music and literature he’d encountered. This process led to multiple demos of the same tracks, each sounding distinct from the others. He then turned to his collaborators for additional input, refining the songs further.
Tonight marks the release of *Against All Reason*, the final EP in a trilogy. As part of the promotional tour, Mr Bewlay has been performing across the UK, including a sold-out show tonight at Le Pub on Newport’s High Street. He’s also performed in Cardiff and Swansea, with more shows planned in Liverpool, London, and at various music festivals. The trilogy of EPs tells a cohesive story: *Electric Reason* represents the exciting beginning, *Black Reason* is the chaotic middle, and *Against All Reason* serves as the reflective conclusion. Each EP mirrors the stage of life Mr Bewlay was experiencing at the time of its creation.
Finally, Mr Bewlay shared how fans can support his work. You can purchase *Against All Reason* on Bandcamp for £6.00, and it’s available on all major streaming platforms. Additionally, fans can buy tickets to his live shows or purchase merchandise through Vinted, all under the name Mr Bewlay.
As always, the show wrapped up with a kazoo performance. This week, Mr Bewlay joined Dani and Stephen for a unique rendition of a famous TV theme song.
