t’s the most wonderful time of the year… and it’s time to delve into endless Christmassy Spotify playlists and blast those cheesy tunes we all know and love!
In this edition of my music roundup, I am going to be counting down my top 10 Christmas tracks to reveal my favourite Christmas song of all time!
10 - Merry Christmas Everyone - Shakin’ Stevens
Let’s kick off this list with a Christmas classic! Without fail, this song with be the first to resurface for me at this time of the year and I’m not mad about that! It is such an upbeat song that can put even the biggest Grinch into a party mood!
9 - Somewhere Only We Know - Lily Allen
I know, technically this isn’t a Christmas song but I always associate this one with Christmas because of the Bear and the Hare John Lewis advert from a few years back. This song always reminds me of the Christmassy scenes from that advert and as well as that, I tend to forget about this song all year until December! So to me it is a Christmas song and that’s that!
8 - Baby It’s Cold Outside - Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews
Gotta love this version by our own Welsh singers! Although upon reflection, the lyrics to this song are a bit questionable, but I can’t help but sing along to this big band track! The bold brass instruments mixed with these two powerful Welsh voices create something epic that just doesn't beat the mellower versions of this song!
7 - Santa’s Coming For Us - Sia
Finally something new this Christmas that’s not Justin Bieber or Ariana Grande rubbish! As soon as I heard this song I was hooked! I adore Sia’s voice anyway and teamed with this groovy Christmas number, it is just glorious! It is so unbelievably catchy! Everyone should give this one a listen this year!
6 - Once Upon a Christmas Song - Geraldine McQueen
Some people say that this Geraldine McQueen thing went on for too long, but I say where is the album?! Peter Kay’s Britain's Got the Pop Factor... and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice was something strange but also something brilliant! This parody gave us this Christmas banger and I have no shame in singing along to this every time it comes on!
5 - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Frank Sinatra
An oldie but a goodie! I adore this slow and eerie number from Frank. The lyrics are so heart-warming yet, to me, there is something about the violin tune and dreary backing vocals and gives it a sad undertone which I love! Does that make me weird?
Not only that, this song always reminds me of the Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special! I know, I’m sad…
4 - Christmas Time (Don’t Let the Bells End) - The Darkness
I have loved this song since the year it was released! I was only 6 years old and rocking out to this amazingly operatic rock and roll track and I still am to this very day! Those jarring guitar riffs mixed with banging drums that make me air drum along to them are things you don’t usually associate with Christmas but it works! Not sure that music video works though…
3 - The Power of Love - Gabriella Alpin
Now, don’t get me wrong, I adore the original by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, but there is just something about this version that makes it one of my go to songs at Christmas! I just love the eerie piano throughout this one mixed with Gabriella’s almost angelic vocals! So much so that I listen to it all year round!
2 - Santa Claus is Coming to Town - Micheal Bublé
No Christmas playlist is ever complete without a bit of Bublé! Though I am not a massive fan of his, I absolutely love his version of this song! It’s the big band that does it for me! It's how they swell with loudness one minute and the next they are soft and delicate that just makes me want to dance!
1 - Fairytale of New York - The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl
This song has to be my all time favourite Christmas tune, not only because I adore the Irish tune to the song but it brings back so many amazing memories from Christmas’s gone by. No matter what, this song would be on the radio when my grandad came to pick me and mum up on Christmas Eve to spend Christmas with him and my nan. Those were the days!
I don’t care what anyone says, this song has to be in everyones favourites list! It’s simply a classic!
