Other big names who have recorded the song are, George Michael, Sammy Davis Jnr., The Pussy Cat Dolls, Bobby Darin and Eels. Even Sheryl Crow, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil' Wayne have sampled it on album tracks.
Muse's recording of 'Feeling Good' was used by Nescafe, in a TV commercial but they used it without permission, so it was replaced by Nina Simone's version. A settlement fee was paid to Muse which they subsequently donated to Oxfam. The Muse version was also used in the Virgin Atlantic advert.
Although it became one of Nina's signature tunes, it was never released as a single until 1987, when it featured in a TV commercial for a fabric conditioner. Its popularity took it into the UK top 40 singles chart.
Nina Simone, was born Eunice Waymon. The 6th child of a North Carolina preacher's family, her ambition was to become a concert pianist. The rejection of a scholarship to a prestigious Philadelphia music college was a huge disappointment to her.
She felt that it was because she was black.
She fused jazz with gospel, soul, pop, blues and folk music. People everywhere loved her.
In the early 1960's, Nina became involved in the civil rights movement. From then on messages relating to civil rights became standard in her recordings and concerts.
I don't know why but I always thought that 'Feeling Good' was written by Nina Simone. I was wrong.
It was actually written by English songwriters, Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, in 1964, for the musical show, The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd.
One of the biggest British stars of the musical stage, Elaine Paige performed her first professional role in that Musical in 1964. She played an urchin.
Nina Simone had a reputation for being temperamental and her fans were never surprised when she was hours late for a concert or even if she failed to turn up at all.
In 1985, she fired a gun at a record company executive, who she accused of stealing royalties from her.
Thankfully, she missed but in 1995, she shot and wounded her neighbour's son when he disturbed her concentration with his laughter. This last incident was kept secret until after her death.
Nina died in 2003. She had battled breast cancer for several years.
Nina left behind, so much wonderful music. Her recording of 'Feeling Good' will always be one of my favourites.
