Newport’s National Children’s Day: A Cathedral Full of Joy!

Newport Cathedral was buzzing with music, laughter, and creativity as the city celebrated National Children’s Day 2025 in style. The event, hosted by Newport City Council, put the spotlight on local kids and young people – and wow, did they shine!

From tiny tots in Flying Start settings singing classics like Wind the Bobbin Up, to powerful poetry and raps from local schools and youth clubs, the day was packed with talent. The Let’s Shine choir, supported by the council’s disabled children’s team, gave a truly heartwarming performance.

The celebration also included a competition to design the event’s programme cover – and 10-year-old Manaaz Jamal’s kindness-themed artwork took the top spot!

Councillor Laura Lacey summed it up best, saying

“Everyone who took part was amazing – it was so inspiring!”

Newport’s young stars lit up the cathedral – and reminded everyone why children’s voices matter.

KLA’s £138m Boost Puts Newport on the Tech Map

Big news for Newport! Global tech giant KLA has officially opened its massive new £138 million R&D and manufacturing centre in the city – and it’s a real game-changer.

The high-tech hub spans a whopping 237,000 sq ft and includes cutting-edge cleanrooms and manufacturing space focused on semiconductor innovation – the brains behind everything from AI to smartphones. Even better? Up to 750 skilled jobs are on the cards!

Newport City Council is thrilled. Councillor Dimitri Batrouni called it proof of the city’s bright future, saying, “People ask why I’m bullish on Newport – this is why.”

With most of the centre’s work aimed at global export, and the semiconductor scene booming in South Wales, Newport’s firmly stepping into the spotlight as a major player in the tech world.

Iestyn & Gabriel’s Ultra Run for Cancer Research Wales

Friends Iestyn Williams and Gabriel Mackenzie from the Tywi Valley just smashed a 52.4-mile ultramarathon to raise funds for Cancer Research Wales – all in honour of loved ones affected by cancer.

Their epic route through the Cambrian Mountains included the punishing Devil’s Staircase and a whopping 4,300ft climb. They crossed the finish line in just under 8 hours and 40 minutes – that’s 88,000 steps and 7,000 calories burned!

They’ve already smashed their £4,000 fundraising target, but donations are open until the end of July via JustGiving.

Talk about going the extra mile – or 52
