Newport is ready to strut into the future with an ambitious 15-year plan to transform its city centre into a buzzing, beautiful place to live, work, and visit. Unveiled by the council, this bold vision is all about making the city feel more welcoming, vibrant, and uniquely Newport.
First up: quick wins! Expect a lively food-focused outdoor market near the Steel Wave, a family-friendly playground in John Frost Square, and festoon lighting to brighten the streets. Add in funky local artwork in empty shop windows, a ‘Tube map’ style walking route, designated busking spots, and a jazzed-up events calendar, and things are set to look a lot fresher by 2027.
But that’s just the start. By 2040, Newport could see a transformed riverfront with water taxis, the historic Westgate Hotel brought back to life, and a revamp of Commercial Street’s tired southern end.
Councillor James Clarke summed it up best: “It belongs to the whole city, not to the council.” With public input at its heart, this plan is Newport’s love letter to itself – and we can’t wait to see it unfold.
Newport West MS Jayne Bryant is all about making this summer one to remember! She’s shining a spotlight on local events like the lively ‘Summer of Fun’ – packed with free activities for kids and families, organised by amazing community groups like Barrackswood and Harlequin.
She’s also been getting stuck in herself, recently visiting one of the sessions and praising the brilliant community spirit. Fancy a bit of culture? The Welsh Yemeni Festival and the upcoming Pill Carnival promise music, food, and plenty of fun.
Jayne’s also reminding everyone to stay safe – especially with the popular Splash ‘Port water play zone now open at Tredegar Park. And for families gearing up for back-to-school, don’t forget the School Essentials Grant to help with the costs.
Whether it’s summer fun, exam results, or everyday concerns, Jayne’s office is open and ready to help. Just drop her a message – she’s only an email or phone call away!
Looking for a special way to welcome summer? St David’s Hospice Care is hosting a magical sunset hike up Twmbarlwm on the Summer Solstice – Saturday, June 21.
Kicking off at 7 PM from Cwmcarn Forest Drive, this 5-mile charity walk offers stunning views over Newport and the Severn Estuary, with a special musical treat from Welsh bagpiper Matthew Bartlett at the summit. It’s the perfect way to reflect, remember a loved one, or just enjoy the evening glow.
Entry starts at just £5 and includes goodies like a medal, glow stick, and refreshments. Dogs (on leads!) are welcome, and don’t forget your torch and picnic blanket.
All funds support St David’s Hospice Care – so every step helps make a difference.
