Friday, November 8, 2024. For some, just another day—but for me, it was pure metal bliss. The night was all about Pyrogaric, celebrating their sophomore album *The Serpent* with an electrifying show right here in Newport at McCann’s. Packed, intimate, and seething with raw energy, it was a night I won’t soon forget.
The evening kicked off with Skunkyard, a last-minute addition to the bill, filling in for We Are Zero (who I’ll have to catch another time). Skunkyard may only be a duo, but their presence? Massive. They had this big, wall-of-sound effect, almost like a full five-piece band. It was my first time seeing them, but I’m already sold and will definitely be tracking them down for more.
Then came Pyrogaric. From the moment they stepped on stage, their commanding presence was undeniable. With Rhys Hone’s bass adding a deeper, heavier element to the sound, Pyrogaric’s style felt somewhere between early Black Sabbath’s dark riffs and a Metal Kate Bush’s ethereal energy—something both nostalgic and fresh.
For a final tour date, the McCann’s venue couldn’t have been a better choice. Intimate and up close, it gave that sense of connection with the band that larger venues just can’t offer. Watching the band with fellow fans, sharing the same love for powerful, atmospheric metal, felt nothing short of magical.
If you’re not already following them, Pyrogaric is all over the web:

Take my word for it—The Serpent and the Pyrogaric experience are not to be missed.
