Hey look! Unveiled in 1990, sculptor Peter Fink’s enormous steel wave, on the banks of the River Usk, was commissioned to commemorate the city’s role in the steel industry. Very much of its time, the Wave has become a symbol of Newport and is well known throughout the area. By Richard "Cookie" Cook

A Tiny Theatre! Newport is home to The Phyllis Maud Performance Space on Alexandra Road. It used to be a public toilet but it’s now Grade II listed and has been turned into a 25 seat theatre.
Lady Rhondda A post box situated by the graveyard along the Risca Road in Newport was made famous when influential suffragette, Lady Rhondda set fire to it, resulting in her refusing to pay a fine and being sent to prison. A blue plaque commemorating the suffragette can be seen on the house next to the site of the postbox.
Joe Strummer of The Clash Joe Strummer of the iconic punk rock band, The Clash lived in Newport for a few years. At the time he liked to be known as John Woody Mellor after his hero, Woody Guthrie, the American Folk musician. While in Newport he had a job as a gravedigger at St Woolos Cemetery.
Tom Hovey!, The Bake-Off Illustrator The man who makes the illustrations for the Great British Bake Off Designs lives in Newport. His Name is Tom Hovey and he has allegedly never tasted any of the cakes he has drawn! Weirdly, Tom says he doesn't care much for eating cake
