Exhibition: BANESWELL – Made you look!

The fresh eyes of an incomer often notice aspects of a town’s history and landscape which have failed to attract the attention of its long-standing residents, and the same can be said for the local areas in which people live. A whole lifetime can pass by without them ever asking how their street got its name, why that house on the corner looks different, what explains the gap between those two buildings, and why there is a lump of stone next to that lamp post.

This exhibition has drilled down into the story of Baneswell, seeking ghosts and images of the past: but has also moved forward and recorded what can be seen and found today, both on the streets themselves and by photographing the people who live there. Memories have been shared and family photographs retrieved from dusty boxes. While preparing for the exhibition new graffiti appeared on the wall of the Queen’s Hotel: ‘Made you look’ it said, and it is hoped that this exhibition will do just that.
