Newport’s Countdown to Christmas Returns with a Bang on Saturday, November 15th!
Newport is getting ready to shine brighter than ever this festive season with the much-anticipated return of “Countdown to Christmas” — a free family event set to light up the city centre on Saturday, November 15, from 2pm to 5.30pm.
Expect a spectacular afternoon filled with live music, funfair rides, celebrity guests, costume characters, and a magical fireworks finale, all culminating in the official switch-on of the city’s Christmas lights.
This year’s event is proudly brought to you by Newport Now BID, in partnership with Newport City Council, Friars Walk, and Newport City Radio. Funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, Countdown to Christmas is now in its tenth year — and it’s going to be bigger than ever.
The main stage, located at the bustling junction of Charles Street and Commercial Street, will host a day of exciting performances — including a multi-million selling chart-topper who’s had three UK number-one singles, ten top 10 hits, and five top 10 albums. They’ll join Councillor Kate Thomas, the Mayor of Newport, to press the big button and light up the city.
Also taking to the stage: the cast of the Riverfront Theatre’s panto Rapunzel, Santa himself, and local music acts brought to you by us here at Newport City Radio.
Fairground rides, face painters, and plenty of festive surprises await — all leading up to the lights switch-on at 5.15pm, followed by a fireworks display at 5.30pm.
Last year’s event brought nearly 12,000 extra visitors into the city centre, and this year is set to match or even exceed those numbers.
Zep Bellavia, Newport Now BID chairman, said: “This is our tenth Countdown to Christmas, and we’re proud to kick off the festive season in style. It’s a brilliant chance to support our 600+ city centre businesses — most of them small independents — and enjoy a great family atmosphere.”
Cllr Dimitri Batrouni, Leader of Newport City Council, added: “The festive season in Newport begins with a real buzz. We’re excited to bring families together with a packed programme — from Winter Wonderland to Santa’s workshops and more.”
Emily Grimes, Friars Walk Centre Manager, said: “We’re delighted to help create an unforgettable Christmas experience for everyone in the city.”
Ian Lamsdale, Managing Director of Newport City Radio, said: “Local music is thriving, and Countdown to Christmas is a fantastic way to celebrate that. We’re all about making radio that’s fun, engaging, and community-powered — and we can’t wait to bring the festive energy to the stage!”
More details — including the celebrity headliner and additional musical performers — will be revealed soon.
