Torchwood: A series 4 overview

Hello! Over the past few weeks, I’ve been reflecting on the Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood and considering whether it would resonate with contemporary audiences. I’ve revisited the previous three series, and today, I’ll focus on the final one, Series 4, also known as Miracle Day. I’ll maintain the same format as my previous blogs—examining both new and old reviews and sharing my perspective. Since this will be my last discussion on the series, I’ll finally address my question: Would Torchwood succeed if produced today?

First, a quick summary of Miracle Day. Series 4 follows the same format as Series 3, featuring a continuous storyline that unfolds over the episodes rather than standalone plots with only a hint of an overarching narrative. The central premise is that, one day, all living creatures on Earth can no longer die, leading to the creation of new laws to manage the rapidly growing population. After the previous series concluded with *Torchwood* disbanding and its members going their separate ways, this new supernatural threat forces them back together to fight. It’s worth noting that this series was co-produced with an American network (Starz), which may have influenced audience opinions.

Reviews: Old and new

As usual, I’ll start with reviews from when it first aired. The majority of critics at that time suggested the series felt quite different from its predecessors. Several reasons were cited, such as the change in production network, the absence of half the original characters, and the fact that it was no longer set in Wales. Many viewers found the Welsh setting appealing, as it is often overlooked in major television productions. The lack of iconic locations like the Torchwood Tower, which featured prominently in earlier episodes, was a notable disappointment. Additionally, the absence of original characters contributed to a feeling of emptiness, especially since three out of five main characters had died by the end of Series 2 and 3. A common critique was that the writing seemed rushed; for example, one review mentioned that the resolution of the overall story felt hasty. On the positive side, some reviews praised the social commentary—a hallmark of the series—and noted that the collaboration with Starz allowed for greater creative freedom.

Next, I examined more recent reviews. These critiques acknowledged the straightforward concept of Miracle Day, highlighting its potential for adding complexity as the story progressed. While the setup received praise, many reviewers felt it was poorly executed, claiming it lacked focus and that the new characters introduced didn’t have the opportunity to develop. The series finale ended on a cliffhanger, which left viewers dissatisfied, especially since Torchwood continued through audiobooks rather than additional televised episodes. The transition from screen to audiobook was seen as a significant shift, and some reviewers criticised certain actors, stating that not all were equally compelling and that some deserved more screen time.

My final opinion

Personally, I don’t believe this particular series would fare well with a modern audience. It seems to lack the charm that made the earlier series so enjoyable. The initial episodes feel more like a generic American crime drama, albeit with sci-fi elements, stripping away the uniqueness that defined Torchwood.

Finally, to answer my overarching question: “Would Torchwood perform as well as it did 18 years ago?” I believe the series could indeed be successful. As a crime drama—a genre currently popular with contemporary audiences—it adds its own unique flair. Additionally, its connection to *Doctor Who* would be an advantage, as that series remains culturally significant and beloved. Based on reviews, I think Series 2 and 3 would resonate best, as they received the most positive feedback.
